#3. The monks started building the Abbey even before the 9th century. They had already been there for hundreds of years.
It fell into disrepair centuries later when funds were being diverted to build the Duomo of Florence to the west of these mountains.
It's built on a rocky ridge, called the Poggio, and the original crypt survives still.
